Show Catholicity in Portuguese India. The difference between Goa that territory in India owned by the Portugueseand Portu-gueseand some other parts of that country under British sway, is set forth by a recent traveler in that region: re-gion: "The population of the Goanese territory ter-ritory are nearly all natives of India, but they are Europeanlzed in their dress, manners and habits, that it 13 difficult to realize that they are natives. The houses are like European villas-neat, villas-neat, clean, furnished in good taste. I speak, of course, of the well to do classes. Perhaps the most striking feature of the little territory of Goa and Salsette is the total absence of any signs of religion other than the Catholic. Cath-olic. One felt one was in a Catholic country. Not a pagoda, not a pullia-yar, pullia-yar, even, is to be seen, but in their place a wayside cross or the shrine of some saint, and from inquiries I learned that, as a matter of fact, only 3 per cent of the population of these two districts dis-tricts are non-Christians and they are not encouraged to make a display of their worship. "Portugal may be a small country, and now shorn of much of her territory, terri-tory, but her territory of Goa is as lasting last-ing a monument to her glory of how she could Christianize the lands she acquired, as the churches in her territory terri-tory are of her Catholic instincts and of her care and solicitude for the maintenance main-tenance of a becoming decorum In Catholic worship. Much, alas, of the pious work of Portuguese missionaries in the east has been undone, but if we may judge by what remains on the west coast and in the territory of Goa, there are still left abundant signs of the piety and zealvof the Portuguese crown." Self-control. Prune thou thy words, thy thoughts control That o'er thee swell and throng; They will condense within thy soul And change to purpose strong. jBut he who lets" his feelings run In soft luxurious flow Shrinks when hard service must be done. And faints at every woe. Faith's meanest deed more favor bears, Where hearts. and wills are weighed' Thou brightest transports, choicest prayers Which bloom their hour and fade. Cardinal Newman. HiddeDeeds. The rain drops fall from leaden skies, And seek a hidden goal, To fill with life the tiny seed, And tender leaves unroll. Thus do the hidden deeds of love, The greatest strength impart, And fill with life that unseen world Where heart doth speak to heart. Marie Kierstead. |
