Show TONOPAH, NEV. (Special Correspondence.) Tonopah. Nev.. Aug. 19. Among the latest suburban prospectors to our noisy camp was the ubiquitous stage robber. Within a mile of town he hailed J. D. Sullivan, who was coming to town with his express wagon. The order to hold up his hands was politely polite-ly complied with. At the'same place the stage met its fate. Dan Robbins, who was in charge of the Candelaria stage, was asked at the point of . the gun to give up his valuables. Wells-Fargo's Wells-Fargo's iron box, the coveted prize, was soon in possession of Sagebrush Tracy. Relieved of their treasures, the express wagon and stage came to town afid reported re-ported to the officers. Sheriff Logan and his deputies were soon in hot pursuit. pur-suit. They found a broken box and empty packages galore, but no trace of the lone robber. The valuable ground in dispute between be-tween the Tonopah & Salt Lake Mining Min-ing company and the Tonopah Mining company was quietly entered and a shaft begun by a number of employes of the former company under the direction direc-tion of Superintendent Healy last .week. The latter company objected, and with superior forces sent the intruders home to their cabins. At Weepah, twenty miles west of Tonopah, a new town has sprung up. The Weepah Gold Mining company, owned by Philadelphia capitalists, is considered one of the biggest mines in all the surrounding districts. George H. Hensel of Philadelphia, accompanied accompa-nied by C. D. Van Duzer and George A. Bartlett of this town, returned from a visit to the gold mine last week and report favorably of the mine, which is capitalized at $3,500,000, together with $1,000,000 reserve fund. The little town of Weepah has now passed its infancy and wants a post-office post-office and daily stage. Father Butler looks after the interests inter-ests of the church there. The great drawback is the lack of water, which is hauled five miles and sold at $2 a barrel. bar-rel. All the mines here are looking well and in the near future Tonopah will have no rival as a mining district. I PROSPECTOR. |
