Show Union Labels Debarred. (Buffalo Times.) It will be a matter of surprising and disagreeable dis-agreeable intelligence to many persons to be informed that the postoffice department depart-ment has decided that mail matter with the imprint of a union label or the Allied Al-lied Printing Trades on the wrapper cannot can-not be transmitted through the mails as second-class matter. This question was brought up by the publisher of an electrical elec-trical trades Journal. The nostol'fice department, in its special spe-cial ruling on the matter, sets forth that it is merely carrying put the requirements require-ments of the law which prohibits the printing of labels or other printed matter mat-ter on envelopes or wrappers covering second-class matter, with certain specified speci-fied exceptions.- It is allowable to print the name and address of a publication, as It is entered at the postoffice, on wrapper or envelope of second-class nature, or such words as "marked copy." "sample copy," etc., but the union label and the words "Allied Printing Trades" seem to be among the inscriptions debarred by law. It will be interesting to note whether this decision will become a matter for congressional action or not. It is to be expected that the trade unions will seek to have the law amended so as to admit the printing of the labels on the wrappers. |
