Show PRESIDENT AND ARCHBISHOP. Erroneous Versions of His Grace's Interview With the Executive. L Some months ago, says Standard and Times, -the president of the United States appointed the- archbishop of Philadelphia a member, of the board of commissioners for Indian affairs at the solicitation of several friends. His grace, who had been merely introduced to the president some years ago, desired de-sired to express his gratitude in person per-son and to speak with the president on matters connected with the office of commissioner, and by appointment visited vis-ited him on Monday last. As nothing was given out for publication concerning concern-ing this interview, several things were, as usual, surmised, and different versions ver-sions of it appeared in the newspapers. The subjects of federation and the coal strike, about which not a word was mentioned, were introduced by the newspapers. The archbishop deemed one mistake of sufficient importance to. correct. It was intimated that he favored the expulsion ex-pulsion from the Philippines of ' the friars whose orders had done so much for religion and civilization in these islands. He believes that the most that can be done (as a matter of expediency and setting forth no precedent) would be the exchanging of the friars for those of other nationalities by the pope and their generals in Rome, if these authorities au-thorities deem it well to do so. The archbishop was favorably impressed im-pressed by the honesty, impartiality and evident ability of the young chief of the nation. |
