The Pontiff Inquired into the religious political and industrial development de-velopment of Ireland and expressed complete sympathy with the Irish national na-tional party, which he termed the de fender of the Catholic religion in Ireland, Ire-land, "because," he added, "that Is the national religion in Ireland and it is the national party." The Pope also j said that the national party's efforts j to aiii;ve liberty for Ireland and also full civil and religious rights for the Irish people by laful and peaceful meai.s would have his sympathy and blessing. The Pontiff presented Mr. Redmond with a portrait of himself bearing (he following autograph inscription: in-scription: 'To our beloved son R?d-mond., R?d-mond., leader of the Irish party in the House of Commons,-with the wish thut he. together with his equally beloved colleagues, using all legal and pacific means, may win that liberty which mak;$ for the welfare' of the Catholic Church and the whole country, we impart im-part our Apostolic Benediction with particular affection." |
