Show HELENA, MONT. Auspicious indeed was the opening of the Workers' Educational club last week when, with a feast of music, speaking, dancing and a hearty welcome, wel-come, its spacious rooms In the Electric building were thrown open. The rooms--were crowded throughout the evening, and the officers and members of the club were assured of good wishes on all sides. . The State Capital band rendered a musical programme, after which tame several numbers by an orchestra. Vice President II.' N. Canoll introduced the speakers of the evening, included in the list being T. J. Walsh, Chief Justice I Theodore Brantly. former Attorney General James Donovan and E. A. Carleton. while W. Q. Conrad sent a telegram of regret at his inability to be present. The officers of the' club are: Alexander Alexan-der Fairgrieve of the Montana Federation Federa-tion of Labor, president; Representative H. X. Canoll. vice president: C. J. Mat-key. secretary, and the usual board of trustees or governors. The Workers' Educational club has been in existence only a few months, but its success has been instantaneous, the membership roll now numbering nearly 400, the list including many of the most prominent men of Helena in commercial and professional life, as , well as a large number of union men of Helena. The club -enjoys the distinction of being be-ing the only one of its kind in the United States, and It is believed that the unions of other cities will follow the example set by the Helena Unions and establish similar clubs. A benefit dinner for St. Joseph's Orphans' Or-phans' Home was given July 4 by the Ladies' Literary and Benevolent society of the Cathedral of the Sacred Hearts. The affair4 came off in the Klelnschmidt building. A lighter meal, consisting of sandwiches, coffee, etc.. was given under the direction of Police Magistrate J. J. Grogan at the state house grounds. The home Is now engaged in the laudable lau-dable purpose of caring for 233 children, It has undergone extensive improvements improve-ments during the past year and further improvements in the vy of equipment are needed. About $1,500 Is needed for ' j beds alone. |
