Show JEWISH ENCYCLOPEDIA . IN CATHOLIC COLLEGES From the Jewish Criterion, published in this city, we learn that a "committee Of one hundred," composed of the most eminent rabbis and Jewish . laymen throughout the country, has been formed for the purpose of distributing 5,000 complete sets of the Jewish Encyclopedia En-cyclopedia amongst Christian theological theolog-ical colleges and 'seminaries and Sunday Sun-day school associations, as well as the principal newspaper offices in, the land; to commemorate the two hundred and fiftieth anniversary of the first arrival of Jews in America, which will occur in November next. This is, as the Criterion Cri-terion says, "a happy thought," for "there can be no gainsaying that the acquaintance of the leaders of public opinion and, above all. the religious educators ed-ucators of our Christian fellow-citizens with this magnum opus will contribute"? by showing the great part which Israel took in the civilization of mankind in general a'nd the development, mental and commercial, of America in particular, particu-lar, to combat the prejudices still prevalent prev-alent in certain circles of our population against the Jews." The . Rev. H. H. Hyvernat, professor of Semitic languages lan-guages at the Catholic. University of America. Washington, in a letter, to the secretary of the committee.': writes as follows: "Concerning your idea of having hav-ing 2.000 copies of Jewish Encyclopedia distributed among' ;the Catholic colleges and other educational' institutions (about 400) and individual clergymen through the efforts of. a committee of Jewish philanthropists and commercial workers, I beg leave to assure you that I fully approve of that idea and promise prom-ise to assist you in. furnishing you lists of institutions and clergymen who will appreciate such a gift. Hoping that in this way your encyclopedia may better accomplish its mission of enlightenment and pacification and thus redound to the honor of the Jewish race,. I remain yours, very cordially," - etc.-Catholic Citizen. '.. j . |
