Show American Dreyfus Case. THERE IS NO TELLING when this court of inquiry into Schley's conduct at the Jbattle off Santiago will end its investigation, so long as newspaper editorials like the one from the New York Sun was allowed to go on the record as evidence. Witnesses for the navy department are still occupying occu-pying the stand. After wading through columns of testimony in the daily press, the reader may conclude that the most damaging evidence against Schley is that he said, "Damn the Texas!" when told by an officer that the Brooklyn was pretty close to that battleship while his own was making I the now famous loop. It may not go j on record, but, analyzing the jealousy i of naval commanders in that engage-j engage-j ment, it is also extremely likely that i the remark, "Damn the Brooklyn!" j mingled with the smoke at the tail j end of the chase. Another thing proven , , against Admiral Schley is that during the battle he recklessly exposed his person to the Spanish gunners; but as Admiral Dewey' did the same thing at Manila, it is thought the tribunal will be lenient towards that offense. Schley said after the battle off Santiago San-tiago that "there was glory enough for all." His enemies in the navy thought he had won too large a share, and to strip him of all glory that conspiracy was concocted, in which the board of strategy and certain captains who were not in the van at Santiago are chiefly concerned. ' It is time that the conspiracy should be exposed before this American Dreyfus Drey-fus case has gone any farther. This vile plot should be probed to the bottom bot-tom and the men behind it called to the carpet. Their conduct is a disgrace dis-grace to the navy as it is offensive to all who love justice and honor bravery. |
