Show PRIEST CUT BY. HIGHWAYMEN, Father Quinn cf New York Held Up in St. Louis. SI- Louis, Jan. 7. Fighting to defend de-fend himself from a murderous attack at-tack by three highwaymen late l!.st night near Twelfth and Market streets, the Rev. Father Charles Quinn of New York stood off his assailants until they drew knives and began slashing him. So valiantly did the priest resist the robbers thai they fled without searching search-ing him, a'ter he had dropped unconscious uncon-scious to ihe street with blood flowing flow-ing fropi thT'ee knife wound.5. The priest is now at the Mullanphy , hospital. He hap two severe knife wounds oh the face and may lose the j sight of one eye. The police have a I good description of his assailants. Father Quinn is'a globe trotter and j when attacked was on his way to -Hnion station to take the train for 1 Butte, Mont. The assault occurred less than three blocks from .the Four Couits. j ! Father Quinn had been staying . at the Laclede hotel, and decided to walk to Union station. He was attacked while walking on the north side of Market street, between Twelfth and Thirteenth streets, directly opposite the city hall. According to the description de-scription furnished by Father Quinn. . one of tho men was sis feet tall, and 1 the two others nearly as taP. Thcy presented no weapons, but o:do:-ecl tho pritFt to hold, up his hand?, apparent- ' ly disregarding his dress. Hardly had the men n-. t):-:c(l- him when Father Quinn shot out iiis list and caught the foremost one on the chin. The hizhwayman ejrepped, and another sw;iug knocked down the second sec-ond nian. The third man held back momentarily, apd as the other two arcse from the gutter the priest swung again and'put both of them down once im ic. The resistance roused the robbers, and the third man rushed at the priest , w ith a knife. One of the others also drew a similar weanon. Taken at a disad vantage, the priest did not waver and continued his defense with energy. He received several cuts about the hands in warding off the kpife thrusts and called for help as he attempted to keep the robbers from surrounding him. The upeven battle soon terminated. One of the knives ripped a gash eight inches long In the priest's face, the cut extenilihff from his temple to his thioat on the right sido. Half-blinded by blood, he continued to fight, and a moment later rpceiv-efl .-a., rut .in the right eye and a stah in' the right bieast. Apparently unnerved by the sight of the. blood, streaming from the priest's face, the robbers turned and fled, while Father Quinn dropped to the sidewalk from exhaustion, He returned to con-scfoijsnesH con-scfoijsnesH in a few moments, and as there was no pedestrian in sight he dragged himself to a drug store at Fourteenth and Market streets, where hit', wounds were dressed and an officer of-ficer tooK him to Mullijnphy hospital. |
