Rio Grande Western passenger No. 6, leaving Salt Lake at 10:30 this morning, carried scores of mourners.. Nearly every man. xvoman and child aboard had some near relative or friend in the catastrophe, catas-trophe, some known to be dead, others not heard from. With xvhat anxiety they endured the tedious journey can be imagined. No. topic was discussed besides the tragedy. As the train glided out of Salt Lake the passengers passen-gers had some dim hope that the newspaper news-paper accounts had been exaggerated, but at every station more discouraging news xvas received, and xvhen linally the train pulled into Scofield and vague rumors that the dead would number 2.10 were -corroborated, it cast a palj-ox-er everybody. The committee of Trovo citizens boarded the train at that place, and a', delegation from other parts of rtah county and Tintic got on at Springville. At every station the number of' jas-sengers jas-sengers increased, and there arc- crowds of strangers in Senfkdd tonight. It is impossible to get a bed or a meal ex-"cept ex-"cept through the hospitality of the bereaved be-reaved people. A body of representative '.ten of Tro-vo Tro-vo conferred xvith Su.ei'intendent Sharp and other officers of the company com-pany upon arriving here, and the services ser-vices of 100 volunteers for any work that may be needed xvas tendered. Superintendent Su-perintendent Sharp extended his appreciation ap-preciation of the offer, but xvas happy to say that no outside aid xvas in immediate im-mediate demand. The committee returned re-turned to Provo on a special which has .been operated between Col.ton and Winter Quarters all day through' the courtesy of the railroad company. II. N. WHITNEY. |
