Putte, April 24. The statement is ii ad,. here today that a new process f"r smelling ores has been perfected "'"1 satisfactorily tested. It is pre-da pre-da t-d it will revolutionize the smeltm business-. The inventor of the new l'""S'i is a South Carolina man whose i'leiuiiv ;.- not disclosed, but Herman Bclliiigcr, a w ell known metallurgist and a smelter man, has just returned from an examination and test of the invention, and fie declared that by it ores that contain but 1 per cent of copper can be smelted at a profit. The present cost is about S cents per pound of copper. By the new system it is claimed the ore will smelt itself with the heat and combustion contained con-tained within itself. Little or no fuel and very little water will be necessary. Mr. Bellinger, who was formerly chief metallurgist for F. Augustus Heinze, is now engaged in building a smelting plant of his own near Victoria, B. C, and will install the new process there for a thorough test and demonstration of its utility. A company of capitalists has secured control of the process. There is hardly any country rock in the entire Butte district that will not yield 1 per cent 1 and more of copper, and the possibili- j ties revealed by the new method are fabulous, if it. will accomplish all that is claimed for it. ANACONDA. Foreman J. p. Welch Honored by His Friends. Anaconda. April 23. J. P. "Welch, who for the past two years has occupied a I position as foreman of the machine department de-partment at the Washoe smelters, was last night the recini ent of a vorir flat tering testimonial of the esteem in which he is held by the men with whom he has been associated in the shape of a SHOO diamond ring. The occasion for the gift was the resignation res-ignation of Mr. Welch, who leaves today to-day for Salt Lake City. It was presented pre-sented at a farewell banquet held in his honor at the A. O. IL hall last nigl.t, at which his friends and associates associ-ates were present to the number of about 2(0. H. H. Smith, who acted act-ed as chairman, called the meeting to order. After a number of vocal and instrumental instru-mental musical selections had been rendered Joseph Russell stepped on the state where Mr. Welch occupied a seat with a number of others, and in a few well-chosen words, expressive of the sentiment of the meeting, presented him with the ring. "We beg of you to accept it," said he, "as a token of our esteem and as a recognition and appreciation cf the kindiy treatment we have received at your hands during the past two years. This stone was not selected on account of its size or beauty, but because it resembled re-sembled your character. It is without blemish or flaw. It is our sincere wih that your future may be bright. your happiness lasting, and that your good deeds may shine among men. even as the sparkle of this gem, which we now present to you." Mr. Welch, who was expecting nothing noth-ing of the sort, would not have been more surprised if he had just awakened awak-ened from a "Rip Van Winkle" sleep. In a few words he expressed his appreciation ap-preciation of the gift, but his voice grew husky and he could not proceed. It was easy to see why his men look 1 upon him as a brother, a manly man, yet weal ing his heart upon his sleeve. PHILIPSBTJRG. Call.
