Show ' Two Boys Drowned In Cork. ' Cork, Sunday. A drowning accident of f melancholy nature occurred today , in the river Lee, near Sunday's well. A i number of youths who were playing in the vicinity had procured a canoe in which they proceeded to take trips on j . the river. One of the boys, John Mur- : phy, in the course of Lis trip capsized j the canoe, and was precipitated into the water. He called upon one of his companions, William Kearns, to come to his aid. and the latter, without a moment's hesitation, jumped in to his , rescue. His heroic efforts to save hid companion, however, proved unavail- ; ing, and the two lads went down be- ' fere the gaze of their horror-stricken comrades. The police dragged the river and recovered both bodies after about, an hour's search. A particularly sad feature of the case is that Murphy, who was quite unable to swim, was very reluctant to make a trip in the canoe, and just as he was starting Kearns exclaimed. "Good-by; we'll meet in heaven." Much sympathy is felt for the parents of the deceased, and universal regret is felt at the sad fate of Kearns, who sacrificed sac-rificed his life in attempting to rescue his companion. HOME ON THE DESEKT. I San Diego, Cal.. Nov. 21. Tho reports which have come f-om the mountain j regions in the southern part of this county, telling of the destitution and starvation of Indians on the Five Cam-po Cam-po reservations, have rc-sulU'l in the taking of stens m this city for the immediate im-mediate relief of the s-ufferers. The first effort will be that of sending food and clothing at ones to the Indians to meet their immediate needs. It is intended in-tended to raise a fund sufficient to make the Indians comfortable during the winter and to provide them with seed, which should be sowed now in order to produce crops for next year. Su?cegavie years .qf drouth have created cre-ated the present condition of destitution, destitu-tion, while the barrenness of the land to which the Indians hee been pushed makes it impossible. for them to get far av.av from want at any time. This has been the hardest year they have ever had. and the old men arid wemen especially espe-cially are in a sad . plight. |
