Show OUR OWN WAR. While the people of the United States show a burning interest in the war of extermination, which England is waging, ex profess in South Africa, it is not remarkable that the war which the United States is carrying1 on in the Philippines Is practically lost sight of? If not lost sight of it has become a matter of so little importance that it is mentioned only with indifference by most Americans. From present indications both wars mentioned above are likely to become issues in the coming presidential campaign, cam-paign, and we miss our guess if. of the two, the South African war does not develop the most interest. In one sense this will bo pleasing to the polical managers on one side of the coming contest, for the least said of the Philippine Phil-ippine war the better from their point of view. But how long will the American people peo-ple remain in a state of indifference regarding our war in the Philippines? The war is farther, from a termination now than it was the day Dewey sailed into Manila bay. The amount of territory ter-ritory now subject to American dom--ination is little more than that which marks the city of Manila, while our army has been increased to nearly 100,000 men, many of whom are dying from disease as well as in battle, while unusually large numbers are losing their minds. In the meantime the enormous war tax goes on. Not until the masses of the people "realize the full extent of taxation wilich the war involves will they rise up an indignantly stop a war that can do no good to America or the world at large. |
