Impressive ceremonies, ceremo-nies, the like of which have never been seen before in Pueblo, marked the ordination ordi-nation of Rev. Ignatius Kurgar by Kt. Rev. Bishop N. C. Matz. D. D.. at St. Mary's Church in the Grove on Sunday. Sun-day. By far the largest concourse of people ever gatheied.in a house of j worship in thic city witnessed the services ser-vices that raised Father Burgar to the holy priesthood of the Catholic Church, the crowd being such that many were compelled to stand. The ordination confers con-fers on St. Mary's a distinction, of which the congregation may feel proud, for such ceremonies are seldom held except in cathedrals. .. It ia the first ordination that hat? ever taken place in Pueblo, and one may never be held here again unless this! city should become be-come a diocese by itself. The kindness of Bi.nop Matz in coming to Pueblo to crdain father Burgar is greatly ap preciated. Fine weather enabled people from all parts of the city to attend the services, which were announced to begin at 8 o'clock. Long before that hour, however, how-ever, the big auditorium of St. Mary'tf was filled to the doorp, and standing I room was at a premium. The ceremonies ceremo-nies lasted until 10:20 o'clock and throughout were characterized by the greatest solemnity. Bitihop Matz was assisted by a number of dignitaries of the Church from outside placey, and in the great audience were many people from the towns around Pueblo. j i In this ordination Father Burgar re-j re-j reived the fuM powers inherent to the : priesthood, his minor ordinations hav-I hav-I ing been received in Denver last week, i and the powers and mission the Lord conferred upon His apostles at the last s -l per were transmitted to the young clergymen in the ceremony yesterday, i -ther Servant, of West Cliffe, Colo., was the assistant Pflest. Sixteen altar bovs attended the services and the choir, consisting wholly of chool children, did splendidly, so well in fact that they elicited praise from Bishop Matz. The bishop made an address ad-dress to the congregation that, though hort. was very impressive. Following-the Following-the saying of mass .the conpegatlon went forward to receive the blessing of the newly ordained priest. Upon the conclusion of the ordination Bishop Matz and all his priests partook par-took of dinner at the parochial residence resi-dence and the bishop returned to Denver Den-ver on the afternoon train. Father Burgar will celebrate his first mass Sunday, which is also a very impressive ceremony. Solemn High Mass will be said at 10 o'clock and Catholic societies are invited to appear in corpore. After mass the Austrian ladies will serve a delicious dinner to all guests. School children, the Austrian band and singers will entertain the you g father and all friendly callers. Rev. Ignatius Burgar was born about twenty-five years ago at Ribnica, in Krain, a province of Austria. He began be-gan his studies in his native land and completed his classical course with high distinction in St. 'John's university, Minnesota, in charge of Benedictine fathers. The same year, 1894, he was received in St. Paul seminary, St. Paul. Minn., where he devotedly prepared himself for holy ministry. As the right reverend bishop has numerous Austrian settlements, he adopted the young theologian the-ologian for the Denver diocese, and being able to speak several languages Father Burgar will undoubtedly be a great acquisition for the mixed Catholic population. |
