The prelate wore the purple robe, which reached to his feet, the heavy chain and golden cross emblematic of his office. He paused until the assemblage had risen and bowed their heads, and then, in e strong, rich voice, he offered a prayer filled with a sentiment of the deep responsibility resting on the party there as- 4- sembled. He said: ' 4- "O, Thou Divine Son of "God, 'The Figure of His Substance and the 4. splendor of His glory' the Light of Light, who illumines every man 4- who, cometh into this world, we lift up our hearts and voices to Thee, who, as we speak, sittest at the right hand of the Father, to Thee, 4-4- Jesus Christ, and pray Xhee to bless this great assembly, this nation 4- and its ruler. Send down wisdom that sitteth by Thy throne, that she illume the intellects and purify the hearts of Thy servants and suggest " 4- such principles and action as may best conduce to the permanent welfare 4- of Thy people. May our rulers rise above consideration of personal or 4- party interests and realize the. awful importance of their position as 4. -f ministers of Thy power, O King of Kings. 4- "Unify all these varied elements that they may hear, and hearing 4- obey the one voice of authority, which is but the echo of Thy own Di- vine voice. And, O pirit of Love, let it be a union not only of obedience, but of affection. And if in the past any injustice has been done to any class let reparation be made. Let the children of those whose fathers . were 6nce enslaved be never made to feel inferiority, and let the children f of the forest, whose ancestors owned the glorious mountains and rivers and rich plains and laughing valleys of this fair land, let them be loved - -f by the great heart of the nation. And we ask of Thee, O Spirit of Love f and Unity, to banish far from this land all religious bigotry. Bless, f O Triune God, this glorious young country. Make us truly loyal to Thee, f truly grateful to Thee, truly obedient to Thee, that walking in the light of intelligence and in the vigor of chastity, we may work out our mani- 4- fest destiny on earth and may fortunately join the chorus of all na- 4- tions, chanting 'Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy 4. 4- Ghost. Amen." f44444444 4-4f4444444444444444444444444 |
