Show TO EXTEND POPE'S DOMAIN. Richard C. Kerens Has Plan to Enable Holy Father Fa-ther to Get Sea Air. Richard C. Kerens of St. Louis, who has just returned from-Europe, is much interested, according accord-ing to a report in the New. York Evening Jlail, in a plan to extend the domain of the Pope to the Mediterranean. Its object is, by the purchase of an immense tract of Italian land, to add a strip of seacoast to the Vatican gardens,, now the narrow prison of Pope Pius X. The plan of Mr. Kerens and his associates, all American Catholics of means, is, it is "stated, to I 'try a narrow tract of land sixty-five miles long, from the Vatican to Civita Vecchia (Old City), on the Mediterranean coast, to inclose and beautify this land and present it to the Pope as an addi- 1 tion to his present domain. ' Visitors. to the Vatican have uniformly reported report-ed the desire of Pope Pius for exercise and change of air, and to not a few he has confided his longing for the sea. The waters of Venice cannot be brought to Rome, but the zeal of Mr. Kerens and his associates asso-ciates has seen a way to which that other and broader sea. the Mediterranean, may be brought to the Pope. Uyis for this purpose that the purchase of the strip of land leading to Civita Vecchia is projected. The initial cost, it is stated, would exceed $1,000,-000. |
