Show Speed And Carelessness One of the most perplexing problems of the day is the checking of the mounting death toll on the hiVhways The past year has seen traffic fatalities -mount at a terrifying rate until today the total is over ten percent higher than the total for the corresponding cor-responding date of last year. For the past few years a successful campaign has been waged against drinking and driving. The slo-o-au of the day has been, "If You Drink Don't Drive. Through the coopoeration of civic organizations and civic minded citizens the accident toll was somewhat reduced each year by the people obeying that popular slogan. Now today with the bigger and more powerful automobiles being built each year another cause of accidents even more difficult than the above mentioned men-tioned has arisen. That cause is SPEED. In man's lust for speed he has become much like the maddened Dictators who crave power above all else. Neither thinks or cares of anyone else but-his self. Neither thinks of the dangers or consequences they are subjecting themselves and everyone else to. ' Harry M. Rayner, Idaho state commissioner of law enforcement, urges motorists not only to cut down on their speed but to exercise greater courtesy cour-tesy and care on the highways of the state as a means to check the death toll. The theory is that if the road hog or the belligerent driver is met with courtesy uniformly, he will soon change his ways. The rules suggested for safer motoring are as follows fol-lows : When you feel obliged to pass a car, don't turn back into line until you can see it in your front mirror. mir-ror. When a driver starts to pass you and misjudges the space available, drop back and let him into line. If some driver wants all the road move over and let him have it. If some driver so far forgets the principles of safe motoring as to attempt to pass you on a hill or a curve, slow down so as to give him room to get into line quickly in an emergency. Surrender the right-of-way at intersections ; get underway slowly these spurts are severe on the motor, and rob (driving of much of its pleasure. If an approaching car is riding the center line, move over and let the driver have all the room he requires. If an approaching driver in passing other cars has (difficulty in getting back into line, slow down for him. |
