Show Travel Miles To Recover Lost fish Here's a real one! Three well known fishermen Ira Overfelt, Julius Jul-ius Duggins and Royal Buchanan were among the anglers that romped the streams' on the opening day, Sunday, Sun-day, and made a fine catch. The crew motored to Mammoth creek, 140 m'les south of Gunnison, where they spent a couple of days landing their prizes. Sunday's catch totaled about 25. but Monday, with warmer wea- ther and better conditions, some 35 were swept from the gushing streams, with Overfelt . leading. With the new catch, Buchanan, eager to get to the "mess pot," volunteered volun-teered to go to camp, clean the f'sh and prepare refreshments. He did a good job, especially in the cleaning part. But he mislaid the fish or had forgotten. When the signal to start home was given, "everything loaded" was an answer. But it wasn't the I truth. The boys made their way home, and when a division of the fish iwas started, 33. of the beauties were 'missing! Think of it m'ssing, when J they had supposedly been loaded. A ; consultation was held Monday night at ten o'clock and a decision reached I to retrace the highway in search of the nrssing fish. Boarding Overfelt's ! new automobile, were the three fishermen fish-ermen Overfelt, Duggins and Buchanan Bu-chanan and Miss Lois Overfelt, delegated dele-gated as an emergency driver. One hundred and forty miles south of ; Gunnison, with eyes alert and s-earch-' ing the darkness, the m'ssing fish were found. The car had passed over the bunch and crushed a few. but the coveted fish were found. Buchanan, it was admitted, cleaned the fish and had placed f,hem on the running board of the car and, the prizes had slipped off. It was six o'clock Tuesday morning morn-ing when the successful search'ng part returned, tired and sleepy but they had the fish. The opening fishing day, as a rule, was not alarming, as far as big catches were concerned in the close v'cinity of Gunnison. Several went to Twelve Mile and other canyons close by, but high and roily waters prevented the ideal conditions that are expected by the middle of June. |
