Show Troublesome Ants Easily Banished If red stinging or harvester ants are making their beds on the farm land the following control measure is recommended by the extension service of the Utah State Agr'cultural college: col-lege: Dissolve one ounce of potassium or sodium cyanide in one gallon of water. wa-ter. Locate the center of the bed and thrust a spade in to full depth. Pry forward on the spade handle and pour about half a pint of the cyanide solution solu-tion into the hole beh'nd the spade. Withdraw the spade as carefully as possible to avoid disturbing the dirt. Better results are obtained when the applicat'on is made just following a rain. To treat the entire bed this process should be repeated by working outward out-ward from the center of the bed. The cyanide should exterminate the ants at the first application, but if a few remain, within the course of a month the process should be repeated using ja smaller quantity of the solution. Caution should be used 'n handling 'the cyanide as it is extremely poi-isonous. poi-isonous. Care should be used to keep it from coming in contact with the skin. The smMl black garden or lawn ants can be controlled by njecting a small quantity of carbon disulphide, commonly known as high-life, into the entrance of each nest. Press the foot down on the entrance to confine the gas. Plants are injured or killed if they come in contact with this chemical. |
