Show Boston Baseball Club Has New Turf Nursery A stock of turf grown through the summer and fall months in unfrequented unfre-quented corners of the outfield and the experiment of sowing grass through snow are methods chosen by the Boston Braves management for insuring a smooth playing surface .on Braves field this year in place of the somewhat patched and mangy appearance ap-pearance the field lias presented during dur-ing the last few years. Failure to grew turf on the infield last spring, due to hard usage, this year led to the establishment of a "turf nursery" near the center field flagpole, where footsteps are scarce. Tile new sod will be brought into the infield after the last of the 1928 spring thaws to bolster up new grass sown on top of a recent snowfall. - The snow planting was carried out with a seed mixture known in golfing and baseball circles for its hardihood, sown thickly on the snow crust. The recent thaw sent the seeds filtering through to the ground and a further warm period filtered enough water to bury the mixture several incites deep The ground crew believes a thick new growth will result nexl spring. |
