Show jRoad Patrolman j Named for County j Automobile "speed demons," who j would use the state highways and j county roads for reckless and fast ; driving, are now in danger. The I practice of disregarding the Ft- ', i laws is to be summarily stopped v 1 i it is intimated that light fines aiid lectures are not to be meted out to violators, but instead a heavy assessment assess-ment will be given to those who ;r caught. This was the iltimatum : sued by the members of the board oi ' county commissioners ' of Sanpete county at the regular meeting held ! at Manti Tuesday. The decision to ! put a check to killing and maiming ; human beings followed a plea "from j sane citizens from many communities throughout the county, when a vigor-( vigor-( ous protest was placed, asking the commissioners to take some action j to stop reckless and fast driving. ; To put in force the laws governing: ! speeding the commissioners estab-j estab-j lished a highway patrol, and Ed. J. I Peterson, chief deputy to Sheriff ' Sanderson, was named as highway i patrolman, who has been vested with : the strictest power to enforce the j laws. Not only will Mr. Peterson be ; given power to curtail speeding, but 1 he will have a motor cycle that will j be capable of running down the fleetest auto. The new officer was ! given instructions to purchase a l motorcycle and this is being done this week and immediately on the arrivxl of the new mount, . Patrolman Peterson Peter-son will be on the job. His territory will be a wide one and "demons" are liable to be surprised at any moment. The jurisdiction of Patrolman Peterson will be outside of incorpor-, incorpor-, ated cities only, at least for the present. It was the opinion of, the county commissioners that the incorporated cities should lend every cooperation in enforcing the laws. Incorporated cities are governed by city ordinances, ordin-ances, but few are enforcing the traffic traf-fic laws in so far as fast driving is -oncerned. If the several municipalities municipal-ities will enforce the laws, the fatalities fatal-ities for Sanpete county will bo greatly lessened. Irrespective of creed, standing" or worth, autoists who insist on violating violat-ing the speed laws within the county, coun-ty, will be in danger of arrest, as the commissioners have given instructions in-structions to enforce the laws to the letter. |
