Show Huge Turkey Farm Promises Big Yield Fifteen hundred baby turkeys, the first consignment of 4000, were received re-ceived here Tuesday by Bayard Tuft, who is embarking in one of the largest larg-est undertakings- of this kind ever undertaken in the valley. The' first consignment will be followed with :."" regular shipments until the total number is reached and domiciled in the modern home built especially for the turkeys. Mr., Tuft has established a modern turkey farm in what is commonly known as the old Jew colony. The brooding plant is equipped throughout through-out with a hot water heating system,' sys-tem,' thus' providing ample warmth for. the baby turkeys. Pens that will care for 200 of the birds, with runs of more than four rods, have been provided and in the runs the turkeys will , get the necessary daily exercise. Automatic water founts and automatic auto-matic feeders, modern in every particular, par-ticular, will He found in every department de-partment where necessary. The baby turks will be kept within the enclosures for a period of thirty days, or until sufficiently developed, when they will be turned into the open spaces for mature development. A "herder" or caretaker will be one of the requisites to look after the big flock and guard against attack from, coyotes and other predatory animals. Mr. Tuft already has stored-four tons 'of special feed forj maturing the birds. . "We are getting the poults fro-v. the Manti hatchery," Mr. Tuft told a News representative, "and the stock is of high quality. While this year's attempt at raising turkeys on a large scale is an experiment, we believe that we can make it a success, suc-cess, as we have provided for all the conveniences and necessities to care for the large flock. If we can hold our lossess down to a minimum." which we expect to, we will be able to supply some of the great demand. Lust year the valley was cleaned of all birds and the prices ranged from . 38 cents to 40 cents per pound. If prices for the coming fall are near those of last fall, we expect to make a success of our undertaking." |
