Show Cochrane Is Near Buck Ewing Standard in Gam( Gordon Cochrane of the Athletics comes nearer the Buck Ewing stnndan of catchers than any backstop sine the famous Buck's day, unless it b( Roger Bresnahan, who helped makt the Giants famous. There have beer backstops, though not many, wh could throw as well and handle pitch ers as well, and as a throwing back stop and in handling thrown balls at the plate there never was a better one than Benny liengough of the Yankees. The Ewing standard, however, in eludes not only everything that a back-slop back-slop must do, but batting and run ning. Ewing was as fast afoot as Wally Schang and a great hitter and base runner. . So is Cochrane, who has a great arm like Ewing's, is as good a hitter and a faster man to first base. Bresnahan was not as fast as either of these, but was as good a thrower, as good a hitter and he wasn't slow. As a base runner he was as smart as Ewing. He was a better all-around player than either of them. But Ewing, Bresnahan, Cochrane I hey are the outstanding catchers of baseball. - |
