Show OVER HALF OF STATE ROADS ARE SURFACED i i One of the biggest struggles in congress this winter, so far as the revenue bill is concerned, will be over the so-called sales taxes on automobiles and automobile parts. The automobile industries and a great many motor organizations believe that these taxes should be repealed re-pealed and have had their hearings before the committee here recent- ly. Those who oppose the cutting off of the automobile tax point to j the great sums being expended by the government fo help in building roads for the benefit of the motorists, and declare that the elimina-; tion of this tax will be followed by a demand to cut off federal aid, for state roads. The figures show that America is rapidly getting a fine system of highways through state endeavor supplemented by federal aid. The j reports show that 23,000 miles of highway were built in 1 924, and of j this amount 1 7,000 miles were surfaced. The estimates declare that j j half of the 25 1 ,600 miles, embraced in the state road system had been ; surfaced by the beginning of 1925, and that the work is being con- I tinued at an even more rapid rate. I The figures represent state work done with federal assistance, i but do not take into account any assistance which may have been given in the way of paving roads by county and local units, off , the J main state systems. . |
