Show Would You Save A Life If You Could? Utah's eighth annual Christmas Seal Sale is on. It opened today . and will continue until Christmas Eve. When the sale closes, the Utah Public Health Association, under whose auspices the cam- paign is conducted, hopes to have raised the amount Utah has been called upon to contribute to the nation wide fight against tuberculosis, and for its own campaign of education. Of all the states resources, human life is the most valuable, and At is Utah's duty to guard the welfare of her citizens even more diligently dil-igently than she fosters any commercial or industrial enterprise. Prevention Pre-vention of disease and maintenance of health are of prime importance to happiness, prosperity and progress of the human race. One of the most urgent problems Utah has to face in protecting the health of its citizens is in the prevention of tuberculosis. Since the organization of the Public Health Association eight years ago, there have been 1.355 deaths frnm tnV,prn,lr,;0 tli-,1, Fi, i:c - w... v v. in WLCA11. LiQV.lI 1UC might; have been spared had the afflicted person known how to care for his health in the early stages of the disease. The work of the Utah Public Health Association is to supply this information by every means possible. This includes nurses, exhibits, clinics, moving pictures, pict-ures, lectures, literature and bulletins. The Utah Public Health Association is not a charitable instution organized for the furnishing of treatment to afflicted persons, but functions solely for the purpose of education of disease prevention. That this knowledge is the big weapon to combat tuberculosis is demonstrated de-monstrated by the figures of the national fight against the disease. Since the fight became a national campaign waged under the direction dir-ection of the National Tuberculosis Association, the death rate in the United States from the disease has beeni cut in two. Based on an average which has been worked out by tuberculosis authorities in various communities, there are at present in Utah 1,565 cases, for it has been demonstrated time and time again that there are at least nine people in each community suffering with the disease to every death in that community during the year. This vast loss of life and disability through disease is a great financial loss to the State. Every person can do their share in this work of saving human lives by purchasing a full quota of Christmas Seals. A dollar invested in this better movement will pay back full returns. They cost but a penny apiece, yet every penny counts. Who knows? Perhaps the dollar you extend may be the dollar which prevents you or some member of your family from contracting this disease. |
