Show Fire Menaces Meeting House Fire threatened the i'.clief society hall last evening anil for a time it looked as though the old landmark was doomed and only for the activities activi-ties of the firefighters the structure Would have gone up in smoke. Fortunately For-tunately the roof was damp 1'iom toe .snow and owing to I he ab.enee of wind the blaze was soon under con- ol. The fire slatted shortly after 8 o'clock and during a party being held for the primary class. The old-fashioned stove pipe, running from the stove through the roof, is still used and it is believed that fire started from the overheated pipe. When it was discovered the alarm was given and all the children were removed from the building. Many volunteers responded and funnel great dilliculty in getting water with which to fight the fire. The hydrant was frozen and it necessitated digging down before be-fore a flow of water' could be obtain-Mr obtain-Mr ed. After a stream ow water was secured se-cured it was an easy matter to subdue sub-due the flames. A bucket brigade was formed and this activity helped to hold the fire in check. The damage is said to be in the neighborhood of $!00 which is fully covered by insurance. |
