Show FALLING OFF IN COMMERCE. Atlantic Ports Lost $400,000,000 irr Trade During Past Year. Washington. Of the approximately $500,000,000 reduction in the foreign commerce of the United States in 190S, when compared with that of the pre- ceding year, nearly $40f ,00.0.000 was hi the trade which was accustome.l to pass through Atlantic ports. This is the statement made in a report issued is-sued by the bureau of statistics of the department of commerce and labor. The imports of the Atlantic ports in the calendar year 1907 were $1,107.-000,000, $1,107.-000,000, while the exports were $1,156.-000.000, $1,156.-000.000, as compared with an approximate approxi-mate import total in 190S of $860,000.-0U0 $860,000.-0U0 and an estimated export total of $1,050,000,000. The falling off in the imports of the Pacific and northern border ports was 16 per cent, while the falling off in exports ex-ports from northern border ports is about 17 per cent. The Pacific ports show a slight increase in the value of the exports, this increase being chiefly in wheat. |
