Show MADDENED MAN MURDERS WOMAN The Victim, Who Was Unknown to Assassin, Shot Down as She Was Reading Her Bible. Murderer Gloried in His Fiendish Crime, Being Found by the Officers Of-ficers Seated Beside the Corpse of Woman He Had Foully Murdered. Sandy, Utah. While sitting In her home reading her Bible, Matilda Ecklund, Eck-lund, 47 years old, living just outside the city limits of Sandy, was shot to death shortly before midnight Thursday Thurs-day night. The crime was committed by Axel Carlson, about 30 years old, a worker in Salt Lake, and was evidently the outbreak of a maddened mind. Miss Ecklund was sitting at a table, reading a chapter from the Bible to her companion, Mrs. Dahlquist, an aged widow. Carlson crept up to one of the windows and fired a shot aimed at Miss Ecklund. The bullet missed the aim, but with a crash shattered the oil lamp. "With affrighted cries the two women leaped to their feet, terror-stricken, and almost In the same moment Carlson had slunk around to another window, through which he fired two bullets that entered en-tered the back of his victim. Fiendish-like, and unsatisfied, he crept to the front door, and, boldly entering the room, stood over the body of his already dead victim and fired a shot which entered the left temple. Then, satisfied with his work, he left the house, occupied only by the corpse and a fainting frightened woman, and went to a saloon, where, over two glasses of whiskey, he told what he had done. Leaving the saloon, sa-loon, he returned to the scene of his rnurderr and when followed a few minutes later by Marshal Brig Ward and others, he was found sitting bj the side of the corpse. Carlson so far hast given unmistato able evidences of insanity, and It is the belief that his act of murder wa9 that of an insane man. |
