Show T!Ae Market and the Mine. Undoubtedly the most interesting development of the week, or for many weeks, in mining circles is the decision of the board of directors of the Utah Copper company to build a mammoth copper reduction plant at some point on they south shore of Salt lake. The scheme also involves the construction con-struction of about fifteen miles of railroad to connect the plant with the source of the ore at Bingham. The contemplated works will have, it is said by those familiar with the plans of the company, a total capacity of 6,000 tons per day, making the enterprise one of the largest ever undertaken in the State. And, as if this were not enough to cause a commotion among those who dally with the hidden treasures of Mother Earth, it is becoming a matter mat-ter of public comment that some large interest, probably the American Smelting & Refining company, com-pany, has taken ninety-day options on 3,000 acres of land in the vicinity of the Utah Copper site. Virtually all the farms between the mountains and the lake have been tied up and if the purchase pur-chase is consummated, the territory will afford a location in which the smelters can smelt and the sulphur fumes can fume without harming the agriculturalist or provoking suits for damages. Such a move would result in the upbuilding ol a large town peopled by smelter employes and those who deal with them and the owner of the land, assuming it to be the smelter corporation, would be in a position to realize a goodly profit on town lots. |
