Show It Makes Cents BY VI JUDCE 4 I. Dear Vi: If you have wicker furniture, when it needs cleaning, scrub it with a stiff brash dipped in a mild warm salt solution. The salt keeps wicker from turning yellow. Bonnie Hendricksen . Dear Vi: When you are grand parents who don't pet to see your grandchildren often, you really miss a lot of their growth, personality, and interest development. On the other hand, parents, who are with them all the time, don't notice the changes much. We bring our kids' grandparents in on their changes by making up progress albums a couple of times a year. We use self-adhesive self-adhesive pages. We measure the children's heights on a piece of yarn and trace hands and feet on colored paper. We even include hair clippins so they can visualize the color. Then, of course, we add art work and papers from school, their signatures, pictures of their favorite toys, and papers from school, their signatures, pictures of their favorite toys, hobbies, and activities, and photos of themselves, their pets, and friends. Our parents are delighted with this and we can see the closeness it is developing between our kids and their absent grandparents. It also lessens the trauma of being separated for long periods of time. The FolgersFamliy And don't forget their sweet voices. Tapes of the cute things kiddies say help dispel the loneliness of separation. One special grandpa I know tells stories to his young grandchildren across the miles. He does this with tapes. His stories are usually about what he and grandma did when they were little, or about children they know in their neighborhood. And as you might suspect, this grandpa teaches a lesson, most inoffensively, with every story. The children play the tapes over and over and feel much closer to their grandfather Ix'eause of them. Dear Vi: The mattress cover for baby's crib was hard and cracking in the center but the sides were soft and pliable, as good as new. Using the old liner for a pattern, I made a new basekt liner for a laundry basket. It was a much letter grade of vinyl than (lie old one and it was simple to do. The cute baby designs that were always covered up on the mattress cover now show and can be enjoyed. Hope Ingland Dear Vi: A crayon, tule of lipstick, lip-stick, ballpoint pen, gum, and many oth?r items left in pockets can ruin clothing in the wash. This was a problem at our house until I put a sign on the hamper and STUCK TO IT. The sign said: "Pockets will he emptied by me and contents confiscated. Also, any garment with items left in pockets will not be laundered." Some disappointments resulted when an article of clothing was wanted and not ready, but after a few times, people at our house started emptying their own pockets. Evadean Dear Vi: When camping out, use a "soap-sock". Simply place a bar of soap into the toe of a nylon stocking and tie it to a tree branch. Hang a plastic jug nearby for instant water. Bryan D. Age 9 Dear Bryan D. Did you read in another column recently about punching a hole in the jug and fitting it with a golf tee so you'd have running water. Two good ideas that go together. Readers: This is your feature. Keep those good ideas coming. I-et us help you with your problems, too. Address: It Makes Cents, care of this newspaper. |
