Show Porter To Wrestle In Australian Games ANTIMONY - Robert Porter, an Antimony resident and sophomore at Piute High School has received special invitation to wrestle in Australia at the Parkroyal Down Under International Games. These games are an annual event hosted in Australia and New Zealand each June and July. Wrestlers from all across the states come together for an unforgettable athletic and cultural cul-tural experience. It is a 13-day trip that will include four days and three nights in Sydney, Australia and seven days and seven nights in Surfer's Paradise on the Gold Coast of Australia. While in Australia, these students have the opportunity to compete in a minimum of four wrestling matches. They will also interact with local people, visit popular attractions, explore a new culture, cul-ture, and experience the native plant and animal life unique to Australia. Porter is a son of Michael and Natalie Porter of Antimony. He was born in Hieleah, Florida and at age one moved with his family fami-ly to Ecuador, South America. He was home schooled as there were no schools available where they lived. When Porter was 10, his family fam-ily moved back to the United States and settled in Antimony, where they have lived the past five years. Porter has wrestled at 103 lbs. this year on the Piute High School varsity team. He took second in the state championships champi-onships and hopes to take first place next season and would like to wrestle in college. He is active in the scouting program and is currently a life scout. He has been working on fund raisers to earn the money necessary neces-sary $3,000 plus to attend these important summer games. These activities have already included a car wash and pizza ' - I ; - - - 1 Robert Porter and pie sales. He currently has chances on a "rag quilt" available avail-able on display at the Richfield K-Mart as you enter the store. One of the most exciting fund raisers ongoing is a chance for donators to win an expense paid trip to Australia. For each $2 donated, the donor receives a ticket for the drawing to be held in June. Many local ranchers, farmers, businesses and individuals have sponsored Porter financially. He has received great support as well from local communities. He still requires some $1400 to be able to attend these games. On May 10, Merlin Jolley of Koosharem is holding a Swap Meet at the Antimony Fire House with part of the proceeds going toward Porter's fund raising rais-ing drive. The rag quilt will also be on hand that day, as well as chances on the expense paid trip to Australia. It is hoped there will be a large turn out for this swap meet, so plan an afternoon trip on Saturday over to Antimony to see friends and relative and support sup-port this worthwhile project. The family expresses thanks to all for this help and support. |
