Show Local TARs Attend National Republican Women Conference Mikki Thompson and Rosa Lee Thompson of the Garfield County Teenage Republicans, recently attended the 32nd Biannual National Federation of Republican Women (NFRW) Conference at the Grand America in Salt Lake City. The two Bryce Valley High School students joined 50 other girls from throughout the United States to serve as pages for the event. Mikki, a freshman at Bryce Valley High School, served as page for South Carolina, while Rosa Lee, a senior at BVHS, assisted Kentucky. While attending the three-day conference, the girls participated in a state flag procession, learned the importance of women becoming involved in government, attended workshops, work-shops, and assisted their assigned state delegates. Speakers at the convention included Governor Mike Leavitt, Lt. Governor Olene Walker, Senator Bob Bennett, Representative Rob Bishop, and Governor Linda Lingle of Hawaii. The purpose of the NFRW is to see women become key players play-ers at the national, state and local levels. Organized in 1938, the federation has about 95,000 members in nearly 1,800 unit clubs throughout the United States, Puerto Rico, Guam and the'Virgin Islands. The Garfield girls were honored hon-ored with the special invitation because of the civic and patriotic patriot-ic activities of the local TeenAge Republicans (TARs). The county coun-ty youth have been designated "Most Outstanding in the Nation" for two consecutive years. All students, grades 7th through 12th, are invited to participate par-ticipate in the TAR events and enjoy varied citizenship programs. pro-grams. Teens may sign up with Jenna Sawyer at Panguitch High School; Raphael Morreale, Trevor Mathews, Brent McCormick or Mikki Thompson at BVHS; and Nicole Beebe or Marsha McLemore at Escalante High School. Every youth who volunteers for any TAR activity will automatically auto-matically receive points toward future scholarship awards. |
