Show i A Sensible Solution To Land Use We cannot afford to have more acreage set aside in Southern Utah by the federal government. We know from past experience, no matter what is promised as to the protection of individual rights such as grazing, graz-ing, that once the environmentalists environmen-talists get their hands into anything any-thing to do with the land, they keep pushing and shoving until the only use for the land is viewing view-ing and this mostly for the hikers hik-ers and backpackers. They would even close many roads so that those hikers and backpackers are denied the right even to enjoy the scenery. (I . cannot understand why AARP and other senior citizen groups have not done more to try to prevent pre-vent this.) If both the Congress and the Legislature feel that the San Rafael Monument would be a boon to the economy of Southern Utah, then I would like to make a suggestion: Trade the Bureau of Land Management or whichever agency controls the land the 650,000 acres needed, for the 1 .5 million acres of the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument that is nothing noth-ing but sage brush, scrub pinion, and juniper-covered flats and hills and with the rest of the acres create several small monuments monu-ments similar to Arches (See LETTERS on page 7-A) Letters To The Editor From Page 2-A National Park. That will preserve pre-serve the few spots that have real scenic value and then connect con-nect those with good roads so that everyone can enjoy them -especially older citizens who stay in motels, eat in restaurants and pump money into the econ What Makes A Good Society? Not too long ago, a serial killer killed more than 20 women in the Seattle area. The investigation went cold and one of the reasons was that all of the victims except one 16-year-old girl were prostitutes. The parents par-ents of that girls and the community com-munity were outraged, but they had failed to be impacted by the other deaths until it hit them too late. Several years ago, an 18-year-old girl was murdered in Washington D.C. The killer was a sibling of a foreign diplomat, so nothing was done because omy. If there are those who like to view the brush lands, there are millions of acres of this kind of land all over the West and you don't have to travel very far to see it. W: Earl Roe Panguitch foreign diplomats are protected by law with total immunity. This is because our politicians want their colleagues and their entourage to enjoy immunity (criminal activities like rape, robbery, murder, etc) on foreign land. Our politicians are not at fault. Like cancer they move an inch at a time. It is our responsibility respon-sibility to stop an inch from becoming a foot, a yard, a mile. There was a threshold for both parties (Republicans and (See LETTERS on page 9-A) Letters To The Editor From Paee 2-A Democrats) for decades not to nominate a divorced candidate for president. Ronald Reagan crossed it, then Bill Clinton set another milestone. What politicians politi-cians want is NOT "What is good for the good is good for the gander" but "What is good for the gander is NOT good for the goose." Just 25 years ago, you had to pull out a piece of paper, write your letter and mail it to your local politician. It went into a wastebasket unless you paid an extra $2.50 for registered mail. Then came the fax revolution, and your fax got there in seconds sec-onds with proof that it got there with a lot less cost. Our politicians politi-cians panicked, and soon became bold enough to turn it off. Then came email. Boy! Politicians hate that! It can deliver a message in a fraction of a second with proof that it got there at zero cost. Again, they panicked and were bold enough to turn it off (called truncated). Politicians at the national level built a China wall. Just try to reach Orrin Hatch, Robert Bennett, or Chris Cannon. At the state, county and city level though, they have no such luxury (yet) to hire bodyguards so they have to do more primitive primi-tive things run or lie. Here is a check list for voters: Does your politician have a phone? If yes, does heshe have a messaging system (they are usually so busy working on something but you should be able to leave a message. They tend to leave it full so you cannot can-not leave a message and some are programmed to tell you simply sim-ply to call back later. Does your politician have email? If no, do you really want such an antiquated politician? If yes, make sure it is not truncated. truncat-ed. . Has your politician developed devel-oped a habit of running away? If running for re-election, what did heshe accomplish to deserve re-election? Did your politician improve the economic growth environment? environ-ment? Figure out whether heshe loves hisher job (true public service) or if heshe loves politics poli-tics (fame, personal influence; etc., for hisher personal gain). Democracy can be at the top or it can be at the bottom where it then is worse than totalitarianism totalitarian-ism or communism, etc. It's like a Cadillac. If the driver (voter) knows how to drive, you can have a smooth and cool ride. If the driver (voter) doesn't know how to drive, heshe lets the car drive itself to take you to the very doorsteps of hell. In a Democracy, it is the voters' vot-ers' responsibility - not the politician's - to assure quality. Technically, politicians are like parasites or cancer cells that feed on the host - the taxpayers. Do you know of any plant, tree, or human that survived without treatment (the voting booth)? Politics contaminates education educa-tion - we are eating the fruits of what we churned out 20-30 years ago. Politics contaminates religion - i.e. the recent Catholic Church scandals. What does it take to make a good society? Nothing more than good government (politics), (poli-tics), good education and good religion. Harshad Desai Panguitch |
