Show Ponguitch News By Mamie Talbot 676-8084 Spring has been playing hide-and-seek with us since the middle of January. Now she has quit playing games and settled down in earnest. The trees and lilac bushes are budding bud-ding furiously. Looking over the valley we see scattered plumes of smoke where the ditches and canals are being cleared for irrigation water, wa-ter, From the fields being plowed are smudges of dust. Welcome lady spring. Sarah Kay called to report their return from the winter in the south country. It was getting pretty hot there and Bill just had to get back to go with Gary Orton down the Wahweap to gather cattle. Sarah said that Bert and Thora Leach beat them home by a couple of days. When the homing fever hits, that's it. Keith and Rosemond Henrie were here for Easter. Their daughter, daugh-ter, Mary K and family from the north were here for the holiday. Rosemond said she and Keith would just go south for a week to gather their belongings and would be right back. Lamar and Clara Worthen were recently honored on their 63rd wedding wed-ding anniversay by their family at the home of grandson Gary Skougard in Las Vegas. The Worthens have five children, 37 grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. Seventy-eight people attended at-tended the gathering. Clara is not very well so they are not sure about getting home for the summer. We miss you friends. Justin Fischer, son of Joe and Leniece Fischer, will be spending two months with his Marine unit in Thailand. Hilma Excell flew to Shoshone, Ida. to spend some time with Max and Glenda Excell. She then came south to see Evan and Nicky Excell's family. They have five lovely daughters but no granddaughters granddaugh-ters as reported recently. Hilma then went to be with Don and Barbara Marshall and came down with them to the Escalante area for Easter. Panguitchites Don and Alta Excell stayed overnight with Hilma. They had been north for the funeral of Jack Reeve, husband of Irene Excell Reeve, who is the daughter of the late Earl Excell. Don and Alta then went on home to Humbolt, Ariz, and arrived safely in spite of a misbehaving car. Congratulations to Tom and Cynthia Simkins on their recent marriage. But Tom, we had to read it in the Escalante News column. Is that any way to treat your neighbors? neigh-bors? Ray and Verda Tebb's daughter, Linda Sue Jacobson and granddaughter grand-daughter Jolene and husband Jeff Strang's family of Cardston, Canada, have been here with Verda. Dean and Angela Tebbs Shaffer's family also were here but went on to St. George to paint mom's house there. The other Tebbs' took dad, Ray from the Care Center and went to Cedar City to spend Easter with Richard and Irene Tebbs. Don and Carol Bunker had friends Steve and Rosie Tupper of Riverside, Calif, over for Easter. The Tuppers enjoyed attending Mass at the local Catholic Church. A very large group of friends and relatives attended a touching (See Panguitch News on Page 5A) Panguitch News From Page 2A memorial service in the Panguitch City Library Sunday for Ray Barnes. We hear of plans to hold an antique car show here in June and that many local folks have some of these precious oldies tucked away in storage sheds. Sometimes it takes quite awhile to get these old fellows rolling, so take warning and start to work if you have an old car or piece of machinery to display. The Panguitch Volunteer Fire Department Depart-ment will be the recepient of the funds raised by the show. The Cornelia Camp DUP held their April meeting in the library. Kathy Peterson gave the interesting lession on "The New State of Utah." Carol Bunker gave the history of ther grandmother, Ann Dodds Cooper. Many of us knew Ann Cooper well. She worked in the county and city offices for years. A dear woman. Correction: Bruce Barney, who died recently and was married to Liz Miller, was the son of Floyd and Mary Barney instead of the Van Barneys as reported. Many of the Young Women of the Panguitch LDS 2nd Ward gave their time and effort to the Panguitch City Easter Egg Hunt, as part of their Laurel projects. Carla Farnsworth was in charge of it. Catherine Howard and Cindy Peterson were in charge of the "picture coloring" contest and Crystal Smith took charge of the egg coloring contest. The Easter Bunny made a special appearance but only Andrew Hatchcock knew who the real Easter Bunny was. Contributions to the event were made by the city, Lions Club, mandy merchants and private citizens. Pat Oetting said they really appreciated all the help. Since the weather the last two years has been less than they would have wanted, she wondered if anyone would notice if they had the Easter Egg Hunt in July next year? |
