Though he looks real, the fellow ticklin' the ivories is a fake. Parade drew hundreds of southern Utah residents to area. Garfield County voters overwhelmingly over-whelmingly voted to build a new high school in Tuesday's bond election, passing the $1,860,000 measure with a 90 percent favorable vote, 850 in favor and 87 against. The only time the county has experienced a higher favorable vote in a bond election was in May 1952 when 96 percent of voters marked their ballots in favor of building a new school in Tropic after the community's old school had burned down. The turnout in Tuesday's election was slightly under the past two bond elections in October 1983 when voters voted down a proposed $6.5 million bond and favorably passed a $2 million bond in September 1984, less than a year later. Supt. Henry Jolley who left late Tuesday night for his new post in Wasatch School District said, "I'm extremely proud of the people of Garfield County for supporting today's youth and those of tomorrow." Newly appointed superintendent ! Jerold Judd agreed that the favorable vote showed wisdom and 1 practicality on the part of county i voters. The new school will be constructed on a 23-acre site owned by the district in Escalante. Escalante's present high school, built almost 50 years ago, has been declared unsafe by the state fire marshal. The 1985 $2 million bond was used to construct a new school for Panguitch which opens for the new school year. Following is the breakdown of Tuesday's voting: Antimony, 26 for, one against; Boulder 32 for, six against; Cannonville, 53 for, none against; Escalante, 381 for, six f against ; Hatch, 34 for, one against ; Henrieville, 42 for, seven against; Panguitch, 164 for, 54 against; j Ticaboo; five for, five against; and Tropic, 113 for, seven against. |
