Show Tropic Principal Completes Masters Degree In Secondary Education TROPIC Lowell J. Mecham, Tropic, has completed requirements for a masters degree in secondary education at Utah State University. For his degree, Mecham k presented a creative component entitled, "Implementation of SRA Mastery Reading at Bryce Valley School, Beginning at Kindergarten Level." He has served as principal for the Bryce Valley Schools, Garfield School District, for the past three years. He completed his bachelor of Science degree in sociology at the University of Utah in 1964. Although Mecham completed his masters degree requirements in the fall of 1984, he will not officiall graduate with ceremonies until June, 1985 at Southern Utah State College in Cedar City. The colleges have reciprocal graduation ceremony agreements, taking Into consideration, distances and business commitments. Mecham said that his goal as a principal is the implementation of meaningful instruction in the language arts, English, writing, grammar and reading. He said, "I am excited about the swing back to basics in education. I feel the 60s caused an upheavel in . education, minimizing basic and traditional concepts and maximizing aberrant behavior," He Lowell J. Mecham continued, "I'm pleased to see that traditional values such as spirituality, lasting marriages and close family relations are again becoming an Important part of American everyday life. Mecham concluded,' "The only regret I have is that my mother will not see my graduation," He said, "I asked mom if I should go for it, and she said yes. My mom and dad always supported me in the things I have done and I really appreciate them for that support. I believe it is vitally Important to anyone's success to have the support of family and friends. I am aware of the support that parents in this area give their youngsters, and it certainly helps the instructors here at school." Mecham is the son of Tropic resident Malen Mecham and the late Angelyn Mecham. His wife Margaret is also a teacher. They have two sons, Steve, a certified public accountant in Salt Lake City, and Scott serving an LDS mission in Valence, France. Completing the family are twin daughters, Sherrie and Shauna, seventh graders at Bryce Valley School. . |
