Show March Visits Up 26 At Zion Park Supt. Harold L. Grafe announced that the total number of visitors to Zion National Park during March was 53,499. This is a 26 percent increase over March 1983. Vists for 1984 now total 106,967, a 19 percent increase over the same period last year. Campground use In March totaled 4,166 campers, a 25 percent increase over March 1983. "Pleasant weather prompted very heavy traffic over the college vacation period," reported Grafe. Numerous visitors have been hiking with backpacking and technical climbing activity picking up. The horse concession began operation in March, providing one-hour and half-day rides that leave from the Emerald Pools parking area. Some naturalist walks and some evening talks have started, and more will be added as the summer season approaches. Grafe stated that refurbishing work is continuing at Zion Lodge with a planned 1984 opening of May 4. Currently, the kitchen is being modernized and the snack bar is undergoing major renovation to provide better visitor service. |
