Show JUST STUFF sfk BY JflN We're playing old Mother Hubbard. We go to the cupboard and find that it's bare. Of course, so is the living room, the dining area, the bedroom and the rest of the apartment. It's amazing what you become accustomed to, and take for granted when you're living home. Oh, you know you'll miss out on the big things like having a washer and dryer at your disposal or having furniture in the living room that compliment each other. Having a kitchen table to eat at. These are all obvious. It's the little things that you don't think about. And there are tons of them. Like a cup of sugar or a cup of flour for baking, spices, salt, baking soda, cooking oil, all those nifty things that were right on the shelf next to the Campbell's soup. Dishes, plate, pots and pans, silverware, dish towels they don't automatically show up in the cabinets. And light bulbs! When you flip a light switch you automatically expect lights! It's not that automatic. As I was packing my things to move to the big city mom kept throwing in little odds and ends. She loaded me up with paper towels and toilet paper, salt and pepper and canned goods. I thought she was being silly. Little did I realize that 50 percent of a monthly pay check goes to those very same silly things! I had the last ,bag packed,, the, last box ij&dedar)d 'was ready to. go. . Whatft doesi mom" 'hand me' but a cleaning bucket filled with rags. I didn't question her knowledge and I'm glad. They were the first things I used. And, unless you're at home, rags are tough to come by. We're in the process of stocking the cupbords, loading the fridge and furnishing the apartment. As it stands now, we have 2 six-packs of Tab, some diet Pepsi, a gallon of milk, a package of DingDongs, and a half pound of hamburger in the fridge. As far as furniture goes, two of my roommates are still bagging it, on the floor. We have several throw pillows in the living room and an overabundance of coffee tables and end tables. We use a large card board box as the kitchen table, and an old bath towel as the cloth. We do, however, have the necessary parts a TV and stereo. What more could we ask for? And a couch is coming tomorrow. It's looking more like home sweet home every day! |
