Show Area Paiute Leaders Meet in Washington Representatives of the Paiute Tribe of Utah and the Bureau of Indian Affairs recently traveled to Washington, D.C. to discuss the "Paiute Indian Tribe of Utah Restoration Act" and the progress of the Tride in the implementation of the Act. Meetings were held with Rep. Jim Hansen (It-Utah) and Rep. Dan Marriott (R-Utah) and Sen. Jake Gam (R-Utah) and Orrin Hatch, (R-Utah) and with Ken Smith and other officials of the Bureau of Indian Affairs. Ken Smith was recently confirmed as Secretary of Indian Affairs in Washington. "The meetings were very productive," said Marguerite Lane, chairperson for the Paiute Interim Tribal Council. "We were well received in Washington, and appreciated the opportunity to discuss this important program with tne Utah delegation and BIA officials." The Paiute Indian Tribe of Utah Restoration Act, which was signed into law by Congress on April 3, 1980, was sponsored by Sen. Hatch and Rep. Mariott. This act restored the federal trust relationship to the Shivwits, Kanosh, Koosharcm, and Indian Peaks bands of Paiute Indians of Utah and restored or confirmed the same relationship to the Center City band. The tribe is now working to develop a constitution, to verify the tribel federal services and benefits furnished to Federally recognized Indian tribes. 3 The tribe is now working to develop a constitution, to verify the tribel membership roll, and to develop a reservation plan.
