Show Ready Track Meet Garfiled County high schools will participate in the annual district track meet to be held in Panguitch April 24. Track teams from Escalante, Bryce Valley and Panguitch will compete with teams from Valley, Piute and Wayne in the district meet. Coaches county-wide said they are excited about the competition for district honors and the opportunity for their boys to test their skills in the district meet in preparation for the Region 12 meet to be held at Southern Utah State College in Cedar City on May 3. Panguitch Coach Kay Englestead says, "Track is a lot of hard work," and the chance to compete with boys from other areas sharpens skills in a sport that requires" intense dedication to training. Coach Greg Allen, Escalante, will bring his team of 15 boys to Panguitch for the meet that starts at 10 a. m. Track stars will compete ' that Allen expects to do well at the region competition the following week. Shane Steed qualified for state competition in the javelin throw at a recent Dixie meet. Donnie Barney will throw discus and Ken Lyman will compete in high jump. Allen says all his boys have trained hard since the opening of the track season in March and they are keyed up for the Thursday meet. Coach Claire Ramsay, Bryce Valley, named nine out of 15 boys to have a chance to excell at the region meet, but says like the other coaches, any one of his boys could come up with an out- standing performance In competition. As likely to capture honors he named Moyle, Johnson in the mile or 2-mile, John Niemann in shot-put and discus, Clint Mecham and Gayle Pollock in the pro-vault, Craig Bybee in the mile and 2-mlle, Rolland Johnson, Neal Foster and Todd Neimann in the 880, and Richl Barton and Brett Cheynoweth in the 100 and 220. Coach Englestead, Panguitch, named two seniors, Troy Pollock on the high hurdles and Kenny Hepworth in the shot-put as likely candidates for winners, but added that all his team members show promise and expects them to compete skillfully. County residents attending the meet can expect to see some outstanding performances among the girls competing in the track meet as well as some outstanding performances from students from high schools. On Friday, 7th and 8th graders will compete in another track meet at Panguitch. |
