Show Students Will Compete Approximately 60 students" in business education and home economics from Escalante, Bryce Valley, and Panguitch high schools along with the vocational agricultural students from Panguitch High School will be among more than 800 students from junior and senior high schools in Utah, Nevada, and Arizona who will visit Southern Utah State College in Cedar City April 29 for Vocational Day activities according to Alden Black, director of vocational education for the Garfield County School District. Contests in business, agriculture and home economics will be sponsored by a trio of SUSC departments. In agricultural competition, high school students will compete in soil and livestock judging in activities held at the SUSC Valley Farm which is located three miles west of Cedar City. Competition will be held in both team and individual events. Agricultural competition will be sponsored by the SUSC Division of Agriculture, School of Science, with assistance from the SUSC Ag Club. "We estimate that about 300 students will participate in contests and demonstrations at the Valley Farm," Darrell H. Matthews, division chairman, said. "Winners of this contest will compete in state agricultural contests later at Utah State University." Another 350-400 students are expected to meet for contests sponsored by the business department, School of Business and Technology, in areas of filing, business math, accounting, spelling, and first and secondyear typewriting and shorthand. "We have invited over 40 schools to compete in these contests," says Larry A. Olsen, associate professor of business. Visiting business students will be treated to a SUSC talent show prior to the annual awards assembly when the winners of the various areas of business competition will be announced. |
