Show Bryce Students In Region Drama Meet I TROPIC Students from Bryce Valley high school participated for the first time in the annual Region 12 Drama Festival hosted recently by Southern Utah State College. "Little Nell," a melodrama, replete with charming maid in distress, nasty villain, and brave hero was the clever one act play in which the novice drama students displayed their talents. JoAnna Loria played "Little Nell'; Moyle Johnson, Carlton the villain; and Scott Mecham, Hector the Hero. Wily Carlton set out to charm the pretty Little Nell and gain control of her family's mortgage but Hero Hector foils his attempts to take advantage of the naive young girl. Nell's father was played by Gayle Pollock and her mother was played by Linda Eddy. Prompter was Jane Eddy and stage manager, Kerry Alvey. Director for the performance was Jody Heaps, Bryce Valley high school drama teacher. Over 300 students from Enterprise, Kanab, Parowan, Piute, Wayne, North Sevier, Gunnison, Valley and Bryce Valley competed in the festival. For the fifth year in a row, students from Enterprise high school won sweepstakes honors in the region 12 competition earning the first place trophy. Enterprise took first place honors, and a. superior rating, with its entry in one-act play competition "Heat Lightning" whjch featured Sterling Scholar Terri Williams, Michael Holt and Billie Robinson. The school also fared very well in the other areas of dramatic competition which included humorous and dramatic interpretation, pantomime mime, mono-acting and scenes-from plays. The Enterprise students, coached by LaRue Dannelly, and other contest winners, have now qualified for the State Drama Festival which will be held at Brigham Young University April 25-26. "Just six years ago Enterprise had no drama department," R. Scott Phillips, festival coordinator, said. "They have now won five sweepstakes trophies which is a real credit to the students and to their fine dramatics coach Mrs. Dannelly." In addition to the Enterprise first place win in one-act competition, superior' ratings also went to second place Gurnison High School for "The Valiant," and to third place winner Valley High School, Orderville, for "To Burn A Witch." "While we are somewhat disturbed at the lack of involvement of almost 50 percent of the schools in the region, we're extremely pleased with the quality of talent displayed by the schools which competed in the regional drama festival," E Phillips said. 1 |
