Show School Board Holds Meet In Escalante ESCALANTE Monthly meeting of the Garfield County School District's Board of Education was held Thursday evening at Escalante High School. Opening the agenda with a slide presentation illustrating the success of on going community councils throughout the county was community education intern for Garfield County, Stan Stott. Following the viewing of assorted slides, Stott also gave a brief summation of accomplishments of the program since its inception in September of last year. It was noted, following Stott's presentation, that both Sterling Scholar Award program and state school board meetings were scheduled to be held on the same day. It was determined that Opal Miller, George Jolley and Howard Nielsen would attend scholarship awards as representatives of Garfield County and the school board. Because of the passage of House Bill 88, which no longer requires recer-tification of teachers, it was felt that an incentive program for professional development might be instituted in the Garfield area. This would possibly involve teachers applying for funding to further knowledge in specific courses of instruction, providing this instruction related directly to new, innovative courses being offered to the students. Concerning staffing patterns within the school district, Mr. Jolley cited a letter recently received by him from present director of curriculum, George Jolley. Jolley states in his communication that he is requesting the board grant a one year's leave of absence that he may further his educational pursuits. Jolley plans work on a doctorate in supervision and curriculum development with an emphasis in instructional technology, at USU Logaa Two proposals for a 1978-79 school calendar were submitted and after discussion as to the educational value derived from each calendar one was accepted unanimously and will be outlined at later date. Upcoming meetings of the State Board of Education in both Tropic and Panguitch areas were discussed. School board members seemed encouraged by publication of agenda to be discussed during the two days meetings. |
