Show E Marlen McWilliams, owner of the Butterfly Shop, stands by huge models of tomato worm and praying mantis found in his "insect room." The new shop is located on Utah-12 Butterfly Museum Opens After 47 years of collecting butterflies, insects and stamps Marlen McWilliams and his wife, Olive have opened a butterfly museum on Utah Highway 12 a half mile east of U.S. Highway 89. In their collection they have 379 different butterflies and insects from all over the world and 634 stamps honoring the insects representing over 6 different counttries. The butterflies and moths range from what many people consider the most beautiful moths in the world called the "Sunet Moth", to the dead leaf butterflies. The Sunset Moth has their name because instead of flying at night as most moths do it flies during the sunset This moth has beautiful irridescent or florescent colors on it's wings that has a glow to them. The dead leaf butterflies look just as their name indicate, when they land on a limb one would mistake them as a dead leaf, but when opened there is a beautiful goldish color strip going through their wings One can tell a butterfly from a moth in many respects, the moth flies at night, the butterfly during the day, the moth has little hair growing on it's antennas, the butterfly's an tennais slender with a swelling on the end, the moth lias a larger scallier body, the but terfly's body is more smooth and slender. The McWilliams are also featuring a 20 to 1 scale insect room The insects are sculp tured of instant paper mat-he a powdered element, when mixed with water looks quite a bit like clay This is molded, dried and painted to simulate the colors of the insects As one professional artist said. "Truly a work of nrt " So far in their 20 to 1 scale insect room there is a scorpion, tomato worm, garden spider. bed bug, beatle. ear wig, and aphids. all sculptured by a professional in San Jose and a preying Mantis, sculptured by Mr McWilliams The museum is open seven, days a week from 9 a.m to 7 p.m Admission is $1 00 each adult and 50 for each child |
