Sheriff Middleton, a former Chief of Police at Panguitch asumed the duties of Civil Defense Director shortly after he was elected Sheriff about sev-' en years ago. Director Middleton has stocked, or is in process of stocking, all available Public Fallout Shelters in the county for a total capacity of 5700 persons. Assuming that the resident population is 3600 with a peak of 4900 the available shelter space is more than ample, which is an ideal situation and unusual for a county In, the State of Utah. Assisting the Director in his endeavors are Civil Defense coordinators in Panguitch, M; K. Heywood, Robert Evans at Hatch, Alton Pollock at Tropic, and Berlin Osborn at Escalante. Cooperating very closely with Director Middleton are members of the U. S. D. A. County Defense Board consisting of the following members: Harold Lindsay, Kent Hortin, Mark Jones, and Don Liston. All of these men deserve a great deal of credit for their fine work and interest in the welfare of the people of their County. "I believe that a good sound Civil Defense program depends oh good planning and preparation so we have trained a number of people in Medical Self-Help; Shelter Management -and Radiological Monitoring; we have 22 members in the Sheriff's Posse trained in all phases of Police and Search arid Rescue Techniques. We hold two meetings a month for planning and organizing the communities to be self sufficient so that they may take care of themselves if necessary," Director Middleton said. |
