Show FOR ONE LONELY VOTER. Remarkable Election Held In a District Dis-trict In France. A curious election took place at Los Sables, In tho department of tho Var, recontly, whon a single elector drow up the whole list of candidates and was tho only ono to voto. Ho naturally natur-ally votod for his whole list, himself Included. Tho cotnmuno contains about COO Inhabitants. Soma time ago thu municipal council reslgnod. Elections were held on Novombcr 25 last, whon only four men came to vote. Thero was to bo a second olectlon last Sunday. Tho wholo day passed and not a solitary voter appeared. A quarter of an hour beforo tho logal limit of tlmo clnpsod a bcnevolont citizen citi-zen at last appeared, drew up a list of ton candidates, Including himself, and voted. A quarter of an hour later the olectlon was declared legally valid, and the other nine candidates wcro duly notified of their election. They havo since declined In a body to bo elected by a slnglo voto. Tho good nnturcd citizen, thorcforo, who alono voted now constitutes by himself tho town council of Lob Sables. What Is stranger still Is that ho may Invoko a precedent In fact, on a previous occasion, oc-casion, another citizen was also tho solo votor at an election, nnd voted for himself, romntnlng legally In office for ten years. This would indicate that political activity Is at a low ebb In t,he Var, and yot tho French prime minister, M. Clemcnccau, Is senator for that department Porhaps his onorgy makos up for tho negllgonco of tho rest. |
