Salt Lake, August 4. At the meeting meet-ing of the citv council to-night Assessor Asses-sor Clute reported that the total valuation valua-tion of taxable properry in th e city for this year amounted to $5".9(V fmS. which is somewhat higher than last year's valuation. This is the first time in the history of the city that a lady has been appointed to such an office. The woman's suffragists suff-ragists will bo pleased at this recognition recogni-tion of the fair sex. The Liberal victory in the city yesterday yes-terday put the council in a generous mood to-night and appropriations were made with a lavish hand. They amounted to over thirty thousand dollars dol-lars and most of the money went to the outside contractors who have been furnishing Salt Lake work for Omaha workmen, thus bringing in here and supporting a large number of voters. Democratic members of the council were able to do some good to-night. Resolutions were introduced giving a franchise for another road to F. ; ! Douglas, to Denver parties. The Democrats Dem-ocrats voted solidly against the resolution, resolu-tion, and as it required eight votes to pass it, it was defeated. Mayor Scott reported that the estimated esti-mated expenses of the city for the en suinir vear were $472. oOO. and t he esti mated 'receipts $207 ,000, leaving $205,-oOO $205,-oOO to be raised by taxation. The rate of taxation was fixed at five mills on the dollar; an increase of half a mill over last year. j TERRITORIAL CONVENTION OF REPS. Salt Lake, August 4. Special to The Dispatch.
