Show She Is Jo Poor. New York, Aug. 3. Mrs. Leslie Carter was examined to-day. The suit grows out of a claim of G. W. Phelps of j $157, for painting h.r portrait. Hie testified she had no property but her wearing apparel, and that she was taken care of by Uer mother, with whom she has been living on Madison avenue, and as the extent and value of her wearing apparel was then made the subject of a long exammathm, Mrs. Carter did not know she was a star; she was hoping to be an actress. She had never ssked her manager for money; she simply wanted to get a start in the profession. She hopes some time to pay her debts, but does not owe more than $20,000. j |
