Show The census bulletins for the whole country show an enrollment in the public pub-lic schools of 12,502,721 for 1890 as against 9,051,008 for 1SS0. That decade covers a period during wnich a systematic syste-matic effort lias been made to establish parochial schools and influence the withdrawal of pupils from the public schools on the ground of their non-religious character. Before 1880 the movement move-ment against the American school system sys-tem was con lined to a fow localities and was by no means so general as since that date. Hence it was feared that the returns of the present census would make a bad showing for our pub lie schools, but those fears were grounds less, as the gain in the ton years of 2G.-54 2G.-54 per c nt has even exceeded the gain in population for the same time, which was only 24.SI1 per cent, I |
