Show THE TIME IS SHORT. August 3d Election. The time is short, but a high tariff is long, very long. This is no time for style and an adherence to a fashionable etiquette. Utah has broken loose. The seed is about to be sown. It is the masses against corporate aggrandizement. It is Utah against IIoKit, the "funny man from Michigan." The wit and the story-teller. The all-around prevaricator. pre-varicator. It is Utah against legerdemain, legerde-main, against theory, against the "ifs," the "ands" and the "buts" perpetrated by men who hare only the conception of a personal reputation to give us in exchange for the heritage bequeathed by our forefathers, that this is our country lor the people and by the po pie. Much will dejK'iid upon the third day of August. Defeat could not ruin, it would only cause delay. For seventy years the Democratic party upheld the dignity of our country, and when it became necessary, v hen the force of argument, when international in-ternational law was ignored as between another power, then did the bayonet take precedence and a forced acknowledgement acknow-ledgement was made that we as a people have made this country and no infringements infringe-ments of rights can be permitted or expected ex-pected . The Democrats of our country made protection to consist of what protection wi.vn.f. Chir country. Not a country for a favored few, but v- country, our rights, and our privileges. James G. Blaine, the leader of the Republican party, the party of tax protection, pro-tection, confesses that he does not yet understand the tariff question, and without questioning the gentlemen concerning his veracity, I would suggest sug-gest to all thoughtful men that he does understand the question, and his reeip- Irocity enactment is sufficient evidence that it is because he does understand the protective question that the counter coun-ter movement was made. What is Reciprocity? It is simply giving and receiving in return, much as some men would endeavor to make apparent that there is a wide difference between reciprocity and free trade. The Enquirer, with its political squibs and yqu inlets, w ill hardly be able to overcome its former standing, for men have intelligence in the same degree as newespapers and will, as they already lo, understand that the Enquirer will j not be able in one brief campaign to place itself on the roll with reliable political newspapers. ! To-day is Monday, then our privileges. priv-ileges. Do not let us forget them. Our privileges consist in maintaining the principles of a government of the peo-plet peo-plet for the people and by the people. If we will do this all will be well. .4tr rrnes. |
